The leader of the DDT group, Yuri Shevchuk, made an appeal to the Moscow City Court in defense of the Memorial Society (by the decision of the Russian Ministry of Justice, it was included in the register of NGOs performing the functions of a “foreign agent”), which investigates the topic of political repression and is engaged in human rights activities.

The text of his appeal was published today on the telegram channel of Nikolai Podosokorsky. In it, Shevchuk spoke about the important role of society, based on personal experience.

I know from my own experience how important the work of Memorial is. My hardest concert happened in 1996 in Grozny, during the first Chechen campaign. Employees of the human rights center “Memorial” were then also there, helping to rescue the prisoners. My grandfather Sosthen Ivanovich Shevchuk is included in the International Memorial database. He was shot in November 1937, rehabilitated in 1956. My father and I never managed to find his grave, but thanks to the employees of the Krasnoyarsk “Memorial” we were able to find documents on his case,

As a reminder, on November 11, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation filed a lawsuit to liquidate the international society “Memorial” entered in the register of non-profit foreign agents. The reason is “systematic violation of the legislation on foreign agents”. On November 23, the Moscow City Court should start preparing the claim, after which it will be determined when the case will be considered on the merits.

The news caused a great public outcry. Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov (both are also Nobel Peace Prize laureates) have previously expressed their support for Memorial. The appeal to the Ombudsman for human rights Tatyana Moskalkova was sent by the former Soviet dissident and ex-member of the Knesset Natan Sharansky. Actions in support of Memorial were also held in Moscow. On November 17, an open letter from cultural figures in support of the society also appeared on the network, which was signed by many famous people, including Stephen Fry, Tom Stoppard, Yuri Norshtein, Vladimir Pozner, Leonid Yarmolnik, Andrey Makarevich, Chulpan Khamatova, Elena Koreneva, Viktor Shenderovich and a lot others.

I feel this connection of the times when I hear that another person has been included in the lists of modern political prisoners, because he is being persecuted for believing in his right to freedom of assembly and opinion. We still have hope, because the decision must be made by the court. And it is impossible not to see that they want to liquidate them not for real violations, but for the courage to be free, to say what they think and do what is required,

– Shevchuk wrote in his address.

Memorial has also already addressed the UN with a request to pay attention to the situation and prevent the destruction of the movement.

Recall that the human rights and charitable society “Memorial” was founded in 1989 by Lev Ponomarev and Andrei Sakharov. The main activity of the society was initially devoted to the study of political repression in the USSR. Today, Memorial is also engaged in human rights activities, the topic of violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in areas of mass conflict and the struggle for freedom of speech.
