A bold rethinking of Pushkin's tales, a Korean thriller about experiments with consciousness, the return of Dexter, Yevgeny Tsyganov as a ghost, a youth comedy with his sister Timothy Shalame, a large-scale fantasy saga and the relaunch of a cult anime – which is just not in the serial “menu” of the end of autumn. We study it in detail and choose what to watch in November.

“Lucky”

November 4, IVI
Cast: Evgeny Tsyganov, Maxim Lagashkin, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Vladimir Menshov, Alexandra Solovieva, Kirill Kyaro, Yulia Snigir, Mikhail Politseimako

The main character of the series “Lucky” Ivan (Yevgeny Tsyganov) is just unlucky: the motorcycle racer's career ends due to injury, alcohol addiction delays, in his personal life everything is also very bad. Instead of, as before, driving on the ice, Ivan only shines to deliver passengers to their homes in a variety of states, working as a “sober driver”. And here, every character is a whole story, whether it is a businessman desperate to the limit, a foreign conductor pumped up with clonidine, or a kept woman who has decided to start a new life.

In addition to Tsyganov, many other stars are employed in the series, including Vladimir Menshov, for whom the role in this project was the last. In addition to the stellar cast, the series is praised for its wit and colorful picture: the gloomy romance of snow-covered sleeping areas is rife.

In this way, he hopes to sort out his own family tragedy – to investigate the mysterious death of his son. Of course, immersion in the consciousness of the dead will not be an adventure for the faint of heart, and the number of all kinds of secrets will only increase.

Director Kim Ji-un mainly shoots crime thrillers and horror films (“The Uninvited”, “I Saw the Devil”) and in his first series he also masterfully inflates the atmosphere, mixing science fiction, mysticism, horror and family drama in one project.

Dexter: New Blood

November 7, Showtime / Amediateka
Cast: Michael C. Hall, Julia Jones, David Magidoff, Jennifer Carpenter

Dexter Morgan returns to the delight of fans after a long hiatus (the eighth season ended back in 2013). “Noble maniac”, played by Michael S. Hall, according to the plot, all this time was busy with building a new life – under a false name, in a small quiet town, leaving his crimes in the past. If you haven't watched the previous episodes of “Dexter”, let's explain (spoiler!): Hall's hero for eight seasons independently administered justice, cold-bloodedly dealing with murderers and rapists. Now he is a law-abiding citizen, works in a store (though he sells weapons) and has an affair with a police officer.

And so Morgan's peaceful life would have proceeded, if in the town someone had not wound up kidnapping and killing local residents. Dexter cannot leave it just like that: the past makes itself felt, the soul demands justice – as it is easy to assume, “new blood” will be shed very soon.

The creators of the series (the showrunner is the writer and journalist Mikhail Zygar) promise the viewers the most daring reading of the classics: perhaps no one has ever treated Pushkin's works so boldly. The action of five well-known fairy tales is transferred to the modern world, and then completely unexpected colors appear in their content.

The first will be shown “Rybka”. A familiar plot takes on the sound of an erotic thriller: Rybka – a movie star (Ingeborga Dapkunaite), caught in a dating app network by Rybak (Pavel Popov). A man trades, robbing naive girls, but in the case of a new acquaintance, everything will go according to a different scenario. He becomes a regular guest in the house of a star, and she fulfills the wishes of his other half – the eternally dissatisfied Old Woman (Daria Zhovner).

After “Rybka” episodes “Balda”, “Princess”, “Saltan” and “Swan” will be released.

The Shrink Next Door

November 12, Apple TV +
Cast: Paul Rudd, Will Ferrell, Casey Wilson, Katherine Hahn, Cornell Womack, Gable Swanlund

It happens that the most incredible, it would seem, plots are prompted by life itself. The Psychiatrist Next Door series, which launches on Apple TV +, is based on just such an amazing true story – about Dr. Isaac Hershkopf, who abused relationships with patients in order to gain confidence and use these people for his own purposes.

The cunning doctor is played by Paul Rudd, and Will Ferrell also starred in the black comedy as a patient. Marty turns to a specialist to learn how to build boundaries with others, and as a result lets the psychiatrist into his life for long 30 years, during which he manages to lead the patient's family business, embezzle his money and even force him to rewrite his will. During therapy, Marty himself turns from a quiet man into an ambitious leader and is so absorbed in these metamorphoses that he does not even notice the obvious.

Ferrell and Rudd also produced the series. The story behind The Psychiatrist Next Door was first told in a podcast of the same name, which gained huge popularity in 2019.

Mayor of Kingstown

November 14, Paramount +
Cast: Dianne Wiest, Jeremy Renner, Kyle Chandler, Derek Webster, Hugh Dillon, Taylor Handley

Kingstown is a fictional town that clearly cannot be called the best place on earth. Crime, racism and corruption flourish here, and the only more or less “live” enterprise is the local prison. Everything in the city is run by an influential clan led by Mike McLuskey (Jeremy Renner), who has enlisted the support of his brothers and mother. Family members are taking control of the “prison” business, trying to restore order in the city, this fact does not suit everyone in Kingstown. McLuskey's opponents include the police, gangs, and local politicians. Whether law and justice will ultimately prevail is a big question.

The creators of the series explain that the project raises issues of corruption and discrimination, and Jeremy Renner says that he was glad to play such a complex and multifaceted character.

“Hornets” (Yellowjackets)

November 15, Showtime / Amediateka
Cast: Christina Ricci, Juliet Lewis, Melanie Lynskey, Sophie Thatcher, Tony Cypress, Ella Pernell, Sammy Hanratty, Stephen Kruger

“Hornets” – thinking about until what moment a person retains a human appearance, what he is ready to go to in order to survive, and most importantly – how to live with all this later. The plot of the thriller with Christina Ricci and Juliet Lewis becomes a plane crash: a plane crashes over the forests of Ontario, in which a school team of talented football players is flying. Those who are lucky (or, conversely, unlucky) to survive the disaster will wait for salvation in the wilderness, trying their best not to die. And for this you will have to divide into groups and literally start hunting – at each other.

A quarter of a century will pass, and the matured athletes from those who survived will need to return to the memories that they tried so hard to bury in the depths of consciousness.

Another fantasy on the theme I see dead people, beloved by filmmakers, is the series Beyond Myself, launched on the Premier platform. Successful financier Dmitry (Evgeny Stychkin) has several serious problems at once: the main one is that he is constantly surrounded by ghosts. Wherever he goes, somewhere next to him is the phantom of his murdered wife (Elena Lyadova), her supposed lover – also a phantom (Evgeny Tsyganov) – and other characters who, in general, should not be in this world. The situation is aggravated by the fact that Dmitry cannot remember the last couple of years of his life. In the hope of filling this gap and saving himself from communicating with ghosts, the hero begins to unravel the circumstances of his wife's death, and in the process of this investigation he discovers completely unexpected details about his life. It is impossible to predict the course of events: apparently, the truth will be revealed only in the very finale.

Cowboy Bebop

November 19, Netflix
Cast: John Cho, Danielle Pineda, Mustafa Shakir, Alex Hassel

“Cowboy Bebop” – originally a truly cult anime, one of the most popular TV series of this genre all over the world. So Netflix has taken on a serious responsibility: Anime fans don't tolerate arbitrary treatment of their favorite stories. However, there is a hope that fans of the original “Cowboy” will still like the premiere: the creators of the new version invited the director of the anime original, Shinihiro Watanabe, as a consultant, connected the same composer, Yoko Kanno, to the work, left the main storyline unchanged, however, decided ” expand the “story by adding details to it. They even promised fans that they would receive answers to questions that arose while watching the anime. It remains to wait for the reaction of connoisseurs of the genre.

For those who are not familiar with the original, we will tell you: the series is about the travels of a team of space “bounty hunters”. For a solid reward, they roam the vastness of space, looking for the most dangerous criminals of the solar system.

Wheel Of Time

November 19, Amazon Prime Video
Cast: Rosamund Pike, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford

Those whose souls yearn for beautiful fantasy, for sure, have long been waiting for this premiere from Amazon Prime Video, which is called, if not the new “Game of Thrones”, then at least a worthy successor of traditions. Here, too, is based on a large book series (The Wheel of Time is a cycle of novels by American Robert Jordan of as many as 14 published books). The series gained popularity among fans back in the 1990s, and such that even after the death of the writer in 2007, they did not want to part with the heroes: in 2013 another author, Brandon Sanderson, finished the cycle.

Everything was filmed on a large scale, as befits a film adaptation of a fantasy saga, and even on the basis of such a huge amount of literary material. Dragons, wizards, magic rituals, epic battles against the dark forces and fantastically picturesque landscapes – all this, of course, will be in the series. Enough romance, exciting adventures, and mystery. Note that the project has long been praised in the press for its special attention to female characters – they are the most powerful here. The main star of the series is Rosamund Pike. She plays the mysterious Moiraine, challenging the forces of darkness.

The Sex Lives of College Girls

November 19, HBO Max / Amediateka
Cast: Pauline Chalamet, Matt Malloy, Amrit Kaur, Stephen Juarino, Kavi Ladner

In general, the name of the series speaks for itself, as well as the slogan of the project – “No rules, no regrets.” The heroines of the youth comedy from Mindy Keiling are four girls who become dorm mates when they go to college. Here they will be fully immersed in a fun student life, novels of varying degrees of seriousness, heart-to-heart conversations and frank discussions of each other's personal lives. Judging by the trailer, this is a recipe in the spirit of Sex and the City plus Sex Education plus American Pie (we hope, however, will do without jokes about the pies).

Among the actors, Pauline Chalamet deserves a special mention: yes, this is Timothy's older sister, and yes, she is not yet as famous as her brother, but it is all the more interesting to see her in action.

Hawkeye

November 24, Disney +
Cast: Jeremy Renner, Hayley Steinfield, Florence Pugh, Vera Farmiga

Not a single serial season is complete without superhero novelties. Of all the Marvel characters this fall, Hawkeye is in the spotlight. Sometimes the heroes need to retire, but before they can live a quiet life with quiet family dinners at Christmas, it is necessary to pass the baton to a new generation. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) begins teaching combat skills to a young woman named Kate Bishop (Hayley Steinfield) intent on becoming the new Hawkeye.

Renner's character, however, is not entirely correct to be classified as a superhero, because he is one of the few Avengers who do not have superpowers. He does good thanks to his own ingenuity and skills: he is an unsurpassed archer, whose phenomenal accuracy is comparable to the supernatural skills of other Avengers. This art in the new series will be mastered by the heroine Steinfield – a girl from a wealthy New York family, a loyal fan of Hawkeye, who also wished to take the path of a fighter for justice after the attack.

True Story

November 24, Netflix
Cast: Kevin Hart, Wesley Snipes, Theo Rossi, Abby Page, William Catlett, Michael James Bell

Kevin Hart became famous thanks to comedy projects, but this time he plays a dramatic role – and, by the way, this is his debut in the series of this genre. Crime drama “True Story” tells the story of the world famous stand-up comedian (his role is played by Hart), whose life changes during a spree evening in one of the cities of his tour. Now the star of comedy shows is no longer up to jokes: everything is so serious that his career and life are in jeopardy.

Hart's company in this project is Wesley Snipes, much more experienced in the genre of crime action – he plays the brother of the protagonist, who will help him out of trouble.
