Arina and Dina Averina
23-year-old Russian gymnasts Dina and Arina Averina again became the leaders of the world standings after an unfortunate defeat at the Tokyo Olympics. The athletes showed excellent results at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships, which started yesterday in the Japanese city of Kitakyushu.
Arina and Dina Averina
On the first day, Averina's sisters won three medals at once: Dina took two golds in the exercises with the ball and the hoop, and her sister Arina allowed the loss of the hoop, but won silver in the exercises with the ball. On the network, this performance of athletes immediately began to be called a revenge after the failure at the Olympic Games, as a result of which the sisters even thought to leave the sport. Recall that then, due to the unfair, in the opinion of many, refereeing, the Russian national team for the first time in 25 years was left without a medal of the highest standard.
The final in exercises with clubs and ribbons took place today, in which the main bets were also placed on the Averin sisters. Dina did an excellent job with the clubs exercise and won another gold medal at the championship. However, Dina did not succeed in becoming the absolute winner in the competition: she was let down by exercises with a ribbon. As a result, the victory went to the Belarusian Alina Gornosko, who, after the qualification stage, was third behind the Averin sisters.

In the final of the competition with the ribbon, Gornosko came out on the carpet first and performed her program well – so much so that she even screamed out of surging emotions after the end of her performance. Following her, Arina Averina began exercises with a ribbon. She also performed without serious mistakes, but, according to the coaching staff, she received an underestimate. Dina Averina followed her sister on the carpet: her performance with the ribbon turned out to be bright and clean, but the judges gave the gymnast 0.05 points less than her rival from Belarus. Thus, Dina became a silver medalist, and Arina took her second silver medal at this champion. As a result, Dina Averina came out of this competition as a 16-time world champion.
After the performance of the Averin sisters, the coaching staff filed a protest, but the judges left their decision unchanged. A similar situation occurred at the aforementioned Olympics in Tokyo: then the judges gave the victory to the athlete from Israel Lina Ashram, despite the fact that she allowed the loss of the apparatus in her program, while Dina performed without serious mistakes.
The head of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner-Usmanova has already commented on the judges' marks at the World Championships in Japan in a conversation with Match TV. She called the assessments unfair and blamed this on Natalya Kuzmina, the temporarily suspended head of the technical committee of the International Gymnastics Federation.
I don’t know what’s going on and what to do with Kuzmina. She could not possibly survive that Russia would have four gold medals. She made it so that Dina did not win the gold medal: it was beyond her strength. We filed a protest, but it was not satisfied. Arina did everything perfectly, Dina – just great, but her mark turned out to be lower than that of the Belarusian athlete. I have nothing against this girl, but Kuzmina continues to do her job,
– Viner-Usmanova expressed her opinion.
Recall that Natalya Kuzmina also supervised the work of judges at the Tokyo Olympics. Earlier it became known that Kuzmina will not be re-elected to the post of head of the technical committee of the International Gymnastics Federation.
