Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, 37, announced yesterday that the company has changed its name to Meta. He said that in Greek meta means “outside, except”. The entrepreneur said that the new name would better reflect the company's activities, as it has long gone beyond social media.
Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are the company that creates technology to bring people together. And the metaverse is the next frontier, just like social media once was when we first started out.
– said Zuckerberg.
The changes, however, do not apply to individual platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp: their names will remain the same.
On the network, the news was taken with humor, and jokes and memes on the topic of the day were not long in coming. Users played with the name itself, comparing it to Greek feta cheese, other similar words like “metal”, “meat” and even metamucil, a laxative. They joked about the founder of the company, who, instead of solving serious problems, deals with, in their opinion, less important issues, as well as the logo – the blue Mobius ribbon.
The funniest memes are in our photo selection.
“Once I caught a fish like this.”
“Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Problems, Meta”.
“Facebook problem solving, name change”.
Some memes were not even ironic, but satirical. Netizens portrayed Zuckerberg as a villain, hinting that by changing his name, he was thus trying to evade responsibility for problems on Facebook. But at its core, Meta will still remain Facebook, no matter what the name of the company is. This is evidenced by the meme with a wolf in sheep's clothing.
“When I was young, we called it Facebook, not Meta.”
“The meta stands for” Mark shirks real responsibility. “
“Mark Zuckerberg renamed Facebook Meta to try to make people forget about the insane level of social damage Facebook has done.”
“I am so proud to finally announce publicly the rebranding I was working on on Facebook.”
“Meta. How it began. How it looks now.”
“What reaction Zuckerberg expected to see when the company was renamed Meta. What it really turned out to be.”
“Facebook solved all issues in one shot: combating disinformation, changing security policies, improving corporate culture, changing the company name.”
