Yesterday in Paris the ceremony of presenting the main European football award “Ballon d'Or”, presented by France Football magazine, took place. For the seventh time, the 34-year-old Argentine footballer and striker of the French club PSG Lionel Messi became its owner. The award was presented to him by former teammate Luis Suarez.

However, if earlier the decision to award the Messi award did not cause much controversy, then this time it seems to have angered many. Leo's main rival was the German Bayern football player Robert Lewandowski, who, in the opinion of many, deserved to win.

On the Internet, Messi's victory caused outrage and bewilderment. The Polish Football Federation's twitter responded to the voting results with one question – “Why?”

It would be better if the “Golden Ball” was handed over to Zendaya,

– he tweeted.

But most of all, the Polish press was indignant, which even called the ceremony “circus”.

In the past and current seasons (last year the ceremony was not held due to the coronavirus, so the achievements of the athletes in two years were taken into account), he really distinguished himself with great success on the field: he became the top scorer in the Champions League, Bundesliga and other tournaments, distinguished himself in Euro- 2020. But that was the choice of the European journalists who took part in the France Football vote: Messi scored 613 points, Lewandowski 580 points. The third was Italian Jorginho playing for Chelsea.

Nevertheless, Lewandowski did not leave without an award and was named the best forward of the year.

Lionel Messi won the Copa America with Argentina last season and became the top scorer of the Spanish championship with Barcelona. In PSG, where he moved this year, the Argentine has not yet distinguished himself with success. Messi's seventh Ballon d'Or makes him the world record holder for these trophies. Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded the Ballon d'Or five times.

Receiving the award, Messi, although he did not hide his joy, said that the “Golden Ball” was to go to his Polish colleague.

I think France Football should give you the Ballon d'Or for 2020. You deserve it. He should be at your house,

– he turned to Robert.
