Olivier Rousteing, 36, designer and creative director at Balmain, revealed yesterday for the first time that he was badly damaged by a fireplace explosion at his home a year ago. Rusten posted a photo in which he is all bandaged, and burns are visible on his skin. The designer spoke about his injuries and shared the story of a long rehabilitation.
Exactly a year ago, a fireplace exploded in my house. The next morning I woke up in the Parisian hospital Saint-Louis. I did my best to hide this story from as many people as possible, and for too long tried to keep it a secret within my team and my circle of friends. Honestly, I don't even know why I was so ashamed, maybe it's the obsession with perfection that fashion is known for, and my own insecurity.

Rousteing admitted that for a long time, even in warm weather, he wore closed black clothes, which made them laugh at him, but he could not answer anything to keep his secret.
Olivier also noted that during his rehabilitation he found strength at work, and said that his new collection, which he created for his tenth anniversary as creative director of Balmain, in many ways reflects his path to healing. There were indeed quite a few bandage layered outfits in the collection, and as it is now clear, this was a very personal part of the collection for Olivier.
I remember long conversations with my doctor, whom I thank very much, and he told me: everything will be fine with you, everything will be fine. I remember when all the bandages were removed from me, I felt such freedom!
– Rusten wrote, thanking all the staff of the clinic who helped him.
In his post, the designer also speculated about the social media phenomenon and why he hadn't released this story earlier.
I really realized that the power of social media is to show only what you want to show! This is what allows us to create our own storytelling and avoid what we don't want to see or don't want to show. This is our new world! But now, a year later, I'm healed, happy and healthy,

The designer's candor resonated in the hearts of his subscribers. Many, including Olivier's star friends, expressed their support and praised him for his courage. Natalia Vodianova, Donatella Versace, Lenny Kravitz, Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, Cindy Crawford, Kim Jones, Cardi B and many others have noted in the comments.
Thank goodness you're okay!

This message of hope, strength and love will always inspire everyone with whom you interact,

Darling, it is such courage to share this story. I am sure of one thing: the real beauty that illuminates everything around is always imperfect and vicious in every sense. Because the soul always shines brightest,

As a reminder, Rusten took over as creative director at Balmain in 2011, when he was only 25 years old. With his arrival, the brand's revenue grew by 20 percent, and the first boutiques were opened outside Paris.
